My years onboard USS Canopus (AS-34) were good ones. I worked with a lot of good people, and although some had been heroes, being a hero wasn’t part of the job description. But that wasn’t the case on the original Canopus (AS-9). Being a full-time hero was definitely part of the job description for the brave men stationed on Canopus during the first five months of WWII.
